The Canary Islands have been dubbed “The wild west of surfing” and when u check it out on a map its actually closer to Africa than Europe pleasan warm water similar to Hawaii. Famous for being shallow, heavy and hollow over urchin covered reefs….(eek…) But there are also fun beachies. By the time open ocean swell reaches the islands the winds which produced them have long died away offering the possibility of clean, long period swells. The islands are often cursed by north-easterly trade winds that blow out the north-westerly swells. Surfing is a fairly new sport to this archipelago and only started to beome popular in the 1990s. Localism is rife…..but it is possible to find quiet waves, especially if you explore a bit and show respect.
